Kitchen Canny
Branding, Graphic Design, Social InnovationKitchen Canny
Following the successful outcome of the award winning Kitchen Canny food waste project by Changeworks I was approached once again to help redesign the kit for it’s commercial release into the market – the first of it’s kind by Changeworks. The original initiative was rolled out in Linlithgow, Dunbar and Leith with a variety of community groups throughout Lothian and Borders participating over the past eighteen months. By the end of March 2011, 3000 people in South East Scotland will have reduced their food waste by an average of 53%. Kitchen Canny makes a deep and lasting impression on participants with over 90% continuing with their new kitchen habits in the long term.
The kit was adapted and refined after getting user feedback from user focus groups. It became evident that there were no real issues with the ‘look’ of the kit as this had proven to be a hit with users but certain usage elements of the kit had to be looked at for example instead of having a cardboard caddy users wanted to be able to throw out their food waste in the least messy way possible – this was solved by branding up a compostable food waste bag which would also display a handy measuring guide and was reinforced with positive user testimonials. The new illustrative artwork gave a nod to the original artwork but was refreshed and enhanced to be able to promote the kit in a commercial market. The artwork was rolled out on other promotional materials like postcards and a dedicated website for Kitchen Canny where users could also register their kit to keep track of their food waste progress and buy other kits if they so wish.
